165 Days Long Chennai Sanitation Workers’ Struggle Ends on a Positive Note

After more than 160 days of relentless struggle, on January 12 the sanitation workers of Chennai, organised under UUI-LTUC–AICCTU, concluded their fight on a positive note with the DMK government agreeing to their core demands. The workers will continue to be paid directly by the Chennai Corporation, successfully defeating privatisation attempts. Minister P.K. Sekar Babu, along with Mayor R. Priya, visited the LTUC office to end the fast by offering juice to the fasting workers.

Demanding Regularisation and Against Outsourcing 

Chennai corporation is divided into 20 zones and sanitation workers are employed under National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM). The Left Trade Union Centre (LTUC, recently affiliated to AICCTU) has been working among NULM workers for years and took up their cause for minimum wages, regularisation and social dignity.

LTUC (The Left Trade Union Centre) declared its affiliation to AICCTU through a massive public meeting at Ambattur on May Day 2025. Comrade Barathi, the State President of Uzhaippor Urimai Iyakkam (Workers’ Rights Movement), presided over the meeting. LTUC State President Comrade AS Kumar coordinated the meeting and rendered a poignant song written by one of the towering communist and the working class leaders of Tamil Nadu, comrade Jeeva.

Contractual Sanitation Workers Demand One Month’s Salary as Bonus!

As Diwali is approaching, contractual sanitation workers in different parts of the country are raising their voice demanding rightful bonus in stead of the pitiful meagre amount disbursed before Diwali. Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 specifically stipulates the provision of minimum and maximum bonus. Under minimum bonus, which is mandatory irrespective of the profit of the institution, the employers are supposed to pay 8.33% of the wages in the accounting year which amounts to one month’s salary.
