Immigrant Workers in the United States: Ruling Class Rhetoric versus Reality

The US President Donald Trump, who 'reigned' the empire previously from 2017-2021 and was sworn in for a 2nd term on January 20, 2025, is going to new lengths to verbally abuse undocumented immigrants. During the election campaign he used racist and xenophobic rhetoric including one outrageous and baseless remark about Haitian immigrants eating dogs in a small town. Let us look at the ground reality from the workers perspective.

Sergio Reyes is a social and political activist from Chile. His father, a carpenter and member of the Communist Party, took him to his meetings with fellow workers. Later, he became a student organizer in high school. In 1973 during his first year in University, he was arrested by the Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship that overturned the democratically elected presidency of Salvador Allende. He was sentenced to 5 years for his political activity and spent 3 years in various concentration camps until he was granted political exile in the U.S in 1976.

Amazon started in 1994 as an online bookseller and distributor. Since its founding it has become one of the largest corporations in the world with a market capitalization of 1.7 trillion dollars. It has 1.2 million part -time and full-time employees. There are 1093 global Amazon facilities (per data from June 2019), with 477 located in the U.S and, notably, 331 located in India. The exact numbers of data centers for Amazon Web Services (AWS) are not available but are estimated to be 36 in the U.S. and 3 in Ireland employing 10,000 people.
