84.8 lakh workers registered under MGNREGS deleted : Lib Tech Report

A Report by Lib Tech found that the net deletion of workers between April to September was 39.3 lakhs, and in total 84.8 lakh workers were deleted from the programme and a mere 45.5 lakh new workers have been added to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). This is amidst a rise in deletion of workers from the programme. It was found that the high rate of deletions coincided with the government’s push for Aadhaar-Based Payment System.

Around 11 sanitation workers were illegally terminated from services by the CIPET, a Government of India institute.

After 10 days of protest by AICCTU, the management came forward for discussion with the president of sanitation workers union comrade Mahendra parida. The management agreed to reinstate the services of five workers. Still, workers refused to join the duty and the struggle is on for reinstatement of other workers too and also demanding the payment of wage arrears, bonus, etc. 

Contractual Sanitation Workers Demand One Month’s Salary as Bonus!

As Diwali is approaching, contractual sanitation workers in different parts of the country are raising their voice demanding rightful bonus in stead of the pitiful meagre amount disbursed before Diwali. Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 specifically stipulates the provision of minimum and maximum bonus. Under minimum bonus, which is mandatory irrespective of the profit of the institution, the employers are supposed to pay 8.33% of the wages in the accounting year which amounts to one month’s salary.

Amid heavy rains on the afternoon of Tuesday, 22nd October, 2024, eight migrant workers and one sub-contractor were crushed to death when a seven-story building under construction collapsed in Babusapalya, Horamavu, in the Hennur police station jurisdiction, Bengaluru. The eight deceased workers have been identified as: Shri. Mahmed Arman, Shri. Mahmed Arshad, Shri. Tirupali, Shri. Solo Pashwan, Shri. Pulchand Yadav, Shri. Tulasi Reddy, Shri. Gajendra and Shri. Manikanthan Satya Raju. The sub-contractor, Shri. Elumalai from Tamil Nadu, is also among those who perished.

The National Rural Livelihood Promotion Mission (NRLM) is a program run by the Ministry of Rural Development. The State Rural Livelihood Promotion Mission (SRLM) is run in each state under the central scheme of NRLM. In Bihar, it is commonly referred as Jeevika and functions under the control of the government’s Rural Development Department. The scheme is run with the declared purpose of creating self-employment opportunities for the unemployed rural women in India.
