The Karnataka Platform based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare] Act, 2025:  Precarity Unaddressed!

On 27th May 2025, the Karnataka Platform-Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Ordinance, 2025 was promulgated by the Governor of Karnataka and published in the Extraordinary Gazette, making it the second state in India to pass a legislation in the interests of gig and platform workers. 
 

PORTS OF PLUNDER: Honnavar Fisherfolk Struggle Against the Corporate Capture

The coastal town of Honnavar, Karnataka, has recently become a battleground between the local fisherfolk and a state-backed private port company called Honnavar Ports Private Limited (HPPL). On February 24th, this year, thousands of men, women, children, and elders staged a sit-in protest over the proposed construction of a private port at Kasarkod beach, in Honnavar against HPPL. The sit-in was met with severe police brutality where over 100 protestors were arrested.

JUSTICE FOR RETRENCHED MINE WORKERS OF BELLARY

Hundreds of mine workers took to the streets in Bellary in a massive protest organized by Bellary Zilla Gani Karmikara Sangha affiliated to the AICCTU, demanding immediate action from the government to provide housing, re-employment, and full rehabilitation. The protest began with a rally from Moti Circle and culminated in the submission of a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner has assured the protesting workers that a meeting would be called to discuss the issue of retrenched mine workers.

First State Conference of AICCTU Karnataka – A Grand Success!

With loud sloganeering against the anti-worker policies of the BJP and divisive ideology of the RSS in the “Hindutva Laboratory of the South” workers under the banner of AICCTU gathered for a rally in Bantwal, Dakshin Kannada declaring “Shramajeevigalu Adhikaaradatta” (Workers March towards securing power). This marked the commencement of the first state conference of AICCTU Karnataka on November 24th and 25th, 2024.

JUSTICE FOR WORKERS CRUSHED TO DEATH in a Building Collapse Incident in Bengaluru 

Amid heavy rains on the afternoon of Tuesday, 22nd October, 2024, eight migrant workers and one sub-contractor were crushed to death when a seven-story building under construction collapsed in Babusapalya, Horamavu, in the Hennur police station jurisdiction, Bengaluru. The eight deceased workers have been identified as: Shri. Mahmed Arman, Shri. Mahmed Arshad, Shri. Tirupali, Shri. Solo Pashwan, Shri. Pulchand Yadav, Shri. Tulasi Reddy, Shri. Gajendra and Shri. Manikanthan Satya Raju. The sub-contractor, Shri. Elumalai from Tamil Nadu, is also among those who perished.

But, unfortunately, anti-worker measures are being enforced in a state where an opposition party led government is in power, i.e., in Tamil Nadu. The recent massive struggle in a plant of Samsung India located at Sriperumpudur, Chennai is a case in point.
